Wordpress 2.0 Dashboard Sucks.

I’m about to rain on everyones happy web 2.0 parade, but bluntly put: The wordpress 2.0 dashboard, more specifically (if not exclusively) the write post/write page forms, suck.

This is wrong, all horribly wrong. I don’t want AJAX slowing down the most simple thing. I don’t need this to feel like I’m writing in an Office program like Word or OpenOffice. What was wrong with these in Wordpress 1.5? Nothing.People wanted fancy web 2.0 shit to make it more “user-friendly” or more “advanced.” Well guess what, it’s annoying, it’s frustrating, and it isn’t user-friendly. It’s slow. Backspacing lags. I can’t input the most used HTML on this site (link tags, mostly) by hand, I have to use the toolbar at the top and wait for it to load a pop-up window and for me to copy/paste the link. Hit submit, wait for it to load again as it processes, then finally, a link!

It doesn’t even listen to what I input while editing either. Just now I had to fight with wordpress to make it stop using italic tags, I went in with the “HTML” toolbar button (that’s another rant) to edit it manually and I learned there was no italic tags anywhere. How was wordpress doing this? I viewed the source from the page, no italic tags there either. Wordpress: How? How did you do this? I hope I’m seriously overlooking something, but I gave up the fight and just deleted the text.

The HTML toolbar button I assume is to save those of us like myself who like doing things by hand. Well, it doesn’t make anything better. It only adds to my frustration because it’s more load time I need to wait through as it processes that.

Wordpress 1.5 write post/page forms were great, if not perfect. They were fast, sleek, and had quicktags for those who weren’t familiar with HTML. This is crap, for lack of a better word. It even invalidates the markup more than the previous version. Even hitting enter to break to another paragraph can proove difficult sometimes.

I feel restricted in this text editor. I have to do everything the way Wordpress wants, I can’t do it the way I want. If it weren’t for other features and security reasons, I would be going right back to 1.5. Hell, why couldn’t there be an option to disable this WYSIWYG and revert back to the 1.5 editor? Then I wouldn’t be so angry at this.

Edit:Oh wonderful, pasting from Gaim to this gave me Japanese and Korean characters… now that was nice.

Funny, it works just fine for me o__o

Well it doesn’t work for me. >:(

I tried working with it in Opera, Konqueror and IE… still slow crapiness and weird behaviour.

agreed. time would have been better spent by the devs developing a plugin for word/openoffice, rather than trying to emulate them.

I agree, a plugin would have been much better suited for something like this, or perhaps a plugin to go back to the old way.

It works okay for me too. I disabled AJAX for the most part in the K2 options menu. Then again, you’re only using the backend of it, so maybe you *gasp shock* messed something up? I dunno, I doubt it, but I’d double check on that italics thing.

    DOWN WITH WEB 2.0?

Well, k2 doesn’t interfere with the Wordpress Dashboard.

    BUT, I have good news.

I unchecked “use visual text editor” from the options/write menu and nothing changed (I did this before ranting, actually). So I went digging around on the wordpress support forums and apparently there IS a way to turn it off, which is at the very bottom of the page for users. I unchecked that, and it went back to normal!

Why it was in that directory is beyond me, but it works.
